The following poem is written in the Ghazal form addressing and questioning the Beloved. The lover calls out to the Beloved of his heart-felt pain, sorrow and distress due to the anguish of separation. It is the Beloved who is also the ‘Saaqi’, the one who intoxicates the lover through his presence, his glance and his blessings.
Terey Koocha-o-Baazar Ka (Ghazal):
Terey Koocho-o-Baazaar Ka Kya Kya Hoga Saaqi?
Rindon Ney Jahaan Ko Bepardaa Kar Diya Saaqi!
Hogaya Hai Raaz Faash Is Fasl-e-Laala-o-Gul Ka
Mehek Pehel Gaee Hai, Tera Kya Hoga Saaqi?
Tarpaa Rahaa Hai Sab Ko Ye Jaam-o-Meena Ab To
Aakar Dekho Sahi, Maston Ka Kya Hoga Saaqi?
Nasaazgaar Hota Hai Kabhi Ye Mausam-e-Zamaan
Aaati Jaati Bahaar Mein Mera Kya Hoga Saaqi?
Atey They Tum Raton Mein Ansoo’on Ki Qataar Mein
Hijr Ki Tanhaaiyon Mein Kya Karoon Ga Saaqi?
Daastan-e-Aamad-e-Yaar Sunaa Raha Hai Har Shakhs
Yahaan Shair-e-Maghrib Ko Kaun Maney Ga Saaqi?
